Use the three-second rule to determine if you are far enough behind the vehicle ahead of you.
Here's how it works.
- Watch the vehicle ahead pass a fixed point, such as an overpass, sign, fence, corner or other marker.
- Begin counting off the second it takes you to reach the same place in the road.
- I you reach the mark before you have counted off three seconds, you're following too closely. Slow down and increase your following distance.
- Remember, the three-second rule applies only in good weather conditions, heavy traffic, poor pavement or if your vehicle is in poor condition, add extra seconds to the three-second rule.
